Belated Valentine’s treats for two…
By Hollie Kiernan
February the 14th has come and gone, and the desperate panic of what to buy passed. However some folk may need to butter up their partners for forgetting the big V Day, or to make recompense for a particularly shoddy present. We all know that being part of a couple at this time of year can be a pain, especially if you don’t like the sickly-sweet taste that this commercial holiday can leave in your mouth.
I have the added headache of the boyf’s birthday landing on the 14th. It’s a little unfair he has to share his B-day with V-day (and get me a present too) so this year I got all the soppy stuff out of the way beforehand (read on for details). However, one could just as easily use the following ideas to make up to your loved one for that nasty red nylon nighty…
We started by taking a trip down to The Royal Horseguards Hotel, for a special Valentine’s-themed afternoon tea. The atmosphere and decor make for a very special day, sitting beside a roaring fire at a table scattered with rose petals. This delicate delight consists of a medley of delicious sweet treats, along with fresh strawberries to dip in a decadent chocolate fondue.
This little gem is priced at £32 per person, or you can splash out the extra £10 and get a glass of champagne each, which of course I recommend. This Valentine themed afternoon tea runs from the 10th until the 19th of February too, so you can beat the Valentine’s rush!
The second couple’s combo activity I ventured to was the Menana Spa in Chiswick for a massage for two. This Moroccan retreat specialises in Hammam treatments, which are deep cleansing rituals that take place inside a traditional Moroccan Hammam, or heated room. The treatment begins with you both lying down inside the Hammam (in either your swimsuit or your birthday suit) while being gently covered in warm water. This is followed by a black soap cleanse and deep exfoliation. I’m no stranger to a pair of scrubby mitts but this treatment was out of this world. My skin has never felt so soft and clean, and the novelty of being so gently washed and pampered in a heated room was pure bliss.
This is followed by a full body massage (solo this time – the boyf was whisked off to a different room) where melted Shea butter was drizzled on my skin and Menana and her caring hands worked through any difficult knots to leave me completely relaxed and delicately fragranced.
This is the ideal treatment for two, if you’re after something a little bit different. When I go again I’m definitely going to bite the bullet and go naked like the natives – the entire experience is so ultimately relaxing and spiritual, and it will really break down any barriers between you and your significant other – as well as provide a talking point over drinks later. The Hammam treatment for two comes in at £140 and is well worth every penny.
